The book shows how a life, an accumulation of small seemingly insignificant events becomes a pearl, an iridescent gem formed minute layer upon minute layer in response to an irritant – in Larry’s case the threat of deportation that hung over his family for years due to false accusations made against his father for being a Communist. I enjoyed Twenty Life Lessons by Lawrence Abrams and felt it gave me a chance to look back over my own life at the same time. He has a style that is very engrossing and easy to read. I find it very special that this is a legacy to pass on to his grandchildren. I recommend this book very highly.
I found that this book inspired me to think about the words and legacy that I want to leave my own children and grandchildren. The author took time to shape his lessons and effectively insert them in poignant personal contexts. His advice and his perspective on life are his own. His implicit encouragement to his peers to, with deliberation and planning, share their wisdom with their children, is the core message of this book.
A bittersweet collection.....of reflections and lessons loving written for his grandchildren, Abrams recounts the discovery of how his father and family were hounded by the FBI ( a scary reminder of what we may now be facing ) and how that informed their lives. ABrams is a master teacher and in this primer sets out to remind us how work and play, learning ,loving and loss weave the complex fabric of a life well lived.....and shared. Savour it .....Jeanette
The early chapters in Lawrence Abrams memoir, "Twenty Life Lessons", bristle with the story of two suspected communist spies his father and mother. The author, a former teacher and principal, tells of a childhood spooked for many years by an FBI investigation that reached into their home in Brooklyn. In its later chapters, each also called a lesson, " Twenty Liife Lessons -" deals intimately with the ups and downs of an otherwise pleasant and fruitful life. Readers will be moved by many of Abrams' reflections in this heartfelt memoir, written to his grandchildren.
Wise and worldly vignettes of a life well-lived with love, loss, and unexpected turns are presented here. This grandfather is writing for future generations of well-loved children sitting in the laps of those who love them. Read and reflect, then take the lessons to heart. It's a quick read, but well-worth the time.
In Twenty Life Lessons Mr. Abrams has successfully woven experiences from his life in an effort to create opportunities for his grandchildren to absorb and develop insights into living happy, meaningful and productive lives of their own.
